Darknight Theatrical Productions has worked very hard to produce the quality
of theatre that their audiences have come to expect of the company. The
money necessary to guarantee that quality is never easy to come by.
Our first fundraiser was the Renaissance Banquet presented in Schaumburg in
the spring of 2000. That same fall, Darknight hosted a party at Breadline
Theatre, neither event sparked much revenue.
In the early spring of 2001, Darknight presented a live rebroadcast of Orson
Welle's world changing radio script War of the Worlds at Frankie
J's on the north side. The company sponsored two performances and a live
auction of donated goods and services after each performance.
In the fall of 2004, Darknight undertook its most daring fundraiser to date:
making and selling tamales. The idea was the brainchild of the nephew of
board members Al and Cathy Espinosa. The recipe used was an old family one
provided by Cathy. Setting our sites high (or so we thought) the company
committed to making 100 dozen tamales. They were sold out before we could
finish making them.
In the spring of 2005, the company reevaluated the tamale fundraiser and vowed
to sell even more. We once again set our sites high (or so we thought) and
vowed to sell 300 dozen over two weekends. Proper planning went into place
and we bought extra equipment and went to work. Two weekends and one garage
sale later (Al and Cathy sold them in their driveway during a blockwide
garage sale) we'd sold 316 dozen tamales.
Not being finished yet, we set our sites on selling 300 dozen in the spring of
2006. After the final tally, we'd sold 372 dozen!!!!
We've also received matching grants from Washington Mutual and products
donated to us by several Chicago area companies.
Now that's commitment to a dream!!
