Darknight Gallery V

The concept of Darknight Gallery

Darknight Gallery was envisioned as a duel objective undertaking:

It was first an homage to the work of Rod Serling.  Mr. Serling was a unique storyteller with a talent for not only chilling his audience with tales of the macabre, but he also had a talent for conveying a theme beneath these dark tales that spoke to the human condition.  Long after the chill of the tale had worn off, attentive viewers would be left to contemplate what it means to be human.  Years later, many of Mr. Serling's tales would continue to plague viewers who eagerly looked forward to reruns on local networks and later on cable.

Our second objective was to act as a conduit for new works of an unusual and often overlooked nature.  DTP has, in five seasons of doing these works received over 750 scripts from around the world for consideration.

Each year, beginning in January, DTP sponsors a playwriting competition. Submitted scripts are to be in the vein of the Rod Serling TV series.  Our objective then is to narrow our script search down to a final six. These six will be rehearsed and performed in a fifteen-minute ‘teaser’ version of each script on May 31, 2008 at UIC theatre as a fundraiser for DTP. The audience that evening will then vote for their favorite script. The three scripts that receive the most votes that evening will become the “winners” of our competition. Those three scripts then will be produced during the FULL PRODUCTION phase and will open on July 18 at UIC. The show will run through August 17.
